Description

Roland Sabates chronicles the life and art of Ross Braught with full color reproduction of all the artist’s known works.
The book begins with a noteworthy foreword by David Adams Cleveland and ends with a reproduction of Braught’s lithographic masterpiece, Phaethon.
This colossal book was published in December of 2021. The 320 page book measures 10 x 14 inches and weighs nearly six pounds.

Phaethon

Ross Braught published the lithographic book Phaethon in 1935.  The book consisted of 37 pages of which 34 are original lithographs printed from a zinc plate.  The type was set by hand and the original 100 copies were signed and numbered. An additional 50 copies were printed for the money guarantors of the project.  The book measured 11 x 14 inches and closely approximates the size of the present edition which is a complete reproduction of the first signed book.

An unknown number of of individual prints were made and sold as a boxed set titled “Landscapes of Phaethon”.   The prints measure 11 x 14 inches and have no borders.   Recently found study prints revealed that the lithographs were printed in pairs with the images measuring 22 x 14 inches and then cut to the 11 x 14 inch size.  (figures)  Note that the prints have borders on only one side and below suggesting that if a print has borders on four sides it is not an original.
